To bring our learning to life, we finished the unit with an exciting cooking session. The children worked brilliantly in teams to prepare their very own vegetarian Bolognese sauce. They practised key skills such as chopping, measuring, and safely using kitchen equipment, while also thinking carefully about the nutritional value of the ingredients they were using and develop a deeper understanding of how simple ingredients can be combined to create a healthy, balanced meal.

Fat, thin, long, short, slimy, wriggly, dirty, wet and tickly.

Red class enjoyed digging for worms today and finding lots of different ones. They used lots of describing words and even began to build a wormery for them.

Highlights of the week included Mr Flower visiting every classroom to share a story, a whole‑school fashion parade celebrating our favourite book characters, and of course our much‑loved World Book Day song! The choir also led us beautifully in When I Grow Up from Matilda, which we discovered in assembly was Mr Joice’s favourite book when he was a child. It’s been a joyful week that truly shows the power of reading to bring us together.

​We are proud to share artwork selected to be submitted by our Year 4, 5 and 6 children for display in the Young Artists’ Summer Show 2026 — a prestigious national exhibition hosted by the Royal Academy of Arts.​

​Now in its eighth year, the exhibition celebrates creativity from the next generation of artists, offering selected students the chance to have their work shown online and on-site at the Royal Academy in the Weston Studio at Burlington House.​​

Being part of this exhibition reflects the imagination, skill and dedication of our talented students, and we are delighted to showcase the work they have created for this special submission.​

In preparation, members of our Year 6 Prayer Council met with Fr Bill earlier in the week to help them understand and prepare for their important ministry of distributing ashes to the school community. During the liturgies, we reflected on the themes of prayer, fasting, and charity before receiving our ashes.

Following this, the children returned to their classrooms to write their personal Lenten promises, marking the start of their 40‑day journey towards Easter with thoughtfulness and intention.

Our Year 6 Prayer Council reflected on their experience:

Murieann - I felt like I was bringing peace to people. 

Teddi - I found it very calming 

Sofia - I liked that I had a special role, it made me feel special 

Jack - I felt God's presence with me

Ella V - I felt like I was sharing God's love and I was connected to him

We addressed topics such as staying safe online, being respectful to others and knowing what to do if something online makes them feel worried or uncomfortable. Where appropriate, children engaged in learning around this year’s theme, ‘Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’.

As part of their assembly, the class also explored the Conversion of St Paul, a powerful reminder of how encountering God can transform a person’s heart and actions. The children spoke about how St Paul went from persecuting Christians to becoming one of the Church’s greatest missionaries, spreading the message of Jesus far and wide. They linked this transformation to the idea of unity, showing how God’s love can change us and inspire us to live in harmony with others.

The children sang beautifully throughout the assembly, helping to lift the message and create a prayerful atmosphere. Thank you to Mrs Kareem for her wonderful support with the music.

Coral Class pupil Harry shared afterwards, “I loved sharing our mission with the school because unity is all about being together and I think that’s important.”

Well done, Coral Class, for sharing your mission message on the power of Christian Unity.

We pretended to be Florence and the nurses she worked with. We learned how Florence trained to be a nurse and how she helped to care for sick people. Through drama, we explored what Florence found when she went to Scutari and how she cleaned the hospital and helped the soldiers feel safe and cared for.

We also learned what Florence did after Scutari and how her hard work changed hospitals for the better. We now know that Florence Nightingale is remembered for helping others and for changing the way people care for the sick, and that her legacy is still important today.

Originating in Mexico, the Posada recalls Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem, reminding us of the importance of kindness, hospitality and making room for others. In this tradition, Mary and Joseph travel from place to place, welcomed into different homes as they continue their journey.

As is tradition at Cardinal Newman, we held a school Posada, with the travelling crib moving between classes. In addition, a set was shared with Year 2 families, allowing children and their families to welcome Mary and Joseph into their homes during Advent. The travelling crib included Mary, Joseph and the donkey, symbolising that they were still on their journey towards Bethlehem.

Families were encouraged to place the crib somewhere special in their home, take a quiet moment together in prayer or reflection, and think about how they could show welcome, kindness and love during Advent. Many families shared photographs of the Posada in their homes, which the children were delighted to talk about and reflect upon in class.

Thank you to all the families who took part in this special Advent tradition and helped make our journey towards Christmas a prayerful and joyful one.

Throughout the year, we raised significant funds for charity through a range of fundraising events and prayerful activities. We also recognised the everyday moments where we share hope with one another through simple acts of love and kindness.

To celebrate our reflections, we created hopeful postcards and completed Jubilee Journalling, capturing the many ways we have lived out hope this year.

Our special week began on Friday 10th October with a beautiful Grandparents Day celebration, where we welcomed grandparents into school to honour their role in our lives. The following week was filled with learning, creativity, and reflection as we explored the theme of Grandparents in greater depth.

We listened to the inspiring words of Pope Francis, who reminds us how important grandparents are in passing on faith, love, and life lessons. We also learned about Saints Anne and Joachim, the grandparents of Jesus, and how they helped shape His early life with care and devotion.

Throughout the week, we expressed our love through art, painting portraits of our own grandparents and sharing stories about the special things we do with them. From baking and gardening to bedtime stories and hugs, every child had something heartfelt to share.

To finish our Mission Week, we hosted a Celebration Assembly where we proudly shared our learning with families.

Inspired by his message, we explored how each of us can be a strong link to others—sharing kindness, faith, and courage in our daily lives. Yellow Class took this theme back to class, spending time thinking about what it means to be a strong link in their own lives. Their thoughtful reflections have been lovingly recorded in our Reflections Book, where they made promises to live out this message in meaningful ways.

On Thursday, our celebrations continued and we started our day with a special Mass led by Father Bill and Year 5. During the afternoon each class then spent time learning about St John Henry Newman’s life, his mission, and the values he stood for. At the end of the day, we gathered together to share our learning and reflect on what it means to be a link in the chain of our school community. We joined together to show how our faith and community links us all here at Cardinal Newman. To finish our celebrations with a smile, everyone was treated to a refreshing ice lolly!
