Cardinal Newman Admissions 2025-2026 - Consultation

Consultation on Admission Arrangements for Cardinal Newman Catholic Primary School for 2025-2026 Academic Year

Notice is hereby given in accordance with legislation that the governing body as the admission authority for Cardinal Newman Catholic Primary School is formally consulting on its proposed admission arrangements for the school year 2025-26.

As an admission authority, the school is required to consult the following:

  • Parents of children between the ages of two and eighteen;
  • Other persons in the ‘relevant area’ (set by the Local Authority) who in the opinion of the school have an interest in the proposed admissions (e.g. local priests, other deanery Catholic schools, etc.);
  • All other admission authorities within the ‘relevant area’;
  • The Local Authority (LA);
  • The Education Service of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.

The six-week (minimum) consultation will begin on 30/10/2023 with the closing date for submitting comments being 10/12/2023.

The proposed arrangements (admissions policy and supplementary information form (SIF) can be viewed on the school website: www.cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk.  Alternatively, if you do not have access to the Internet and you wish to request a printed copy of the admissions arrangements and a response form, please contact Claire Madden at Cardinal Newman School.

Comments on the proposed admission arrangements should be sent to Cardinal Newman School by the closing date (latest midnight on 10/12/2023).

Note: The ‘relevant area’ is the area for a school (determined by its LA and then reviewed every two years) within which the admission authority for that school must consult all other prescribed schools on its admission arrangements.

Travelling Book Fair

Next week, we will be hosting our Travelling Book Fair.  This will be a great opportunity for children to extend their own book collection, engage them with reading and get some Christmas shopping out of the way!  It is also a fantastic chance for the school to receive funds to purchase books for our own library.

The fair will run from 3:15-3:40 each afternoon in Blue Class next week.  If you are going to the Book Fair from KS2, please use the main KS1 gate rather than walking around Reception to avoid congestion.  Each class will have an opportunity to visit the book fair during the week and think about any books they may wish to purchase.  Please see the attached flyer for some of the best-selling titles that will be on offer or view the full range here https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/travelling-books/the-books

Payments

  1. New for Autumn 2023 - We will be able to accept card payments on site as well as cash. If you are paying by cash, we ask that you try wherever possible, to bring the correct change.
  2. If your child attends Whizz Kids we will provide an opportunity to visit the book fair, if you are sending money in with your child, please ensure it is in a sealed envelope with the child's name/class/book choices and total cost written on the envelope.  Please only send in correct change.
  3. You will be able to fill out an online form for payments by card either at the fair or at home. https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/pay/1264534  Please send in the order confirmation before Friday 10th December so the books can be sent home before the Book Fair is collected.

Please note, that if we run out of certain books at the fair, we will be able to place an order for most titles to be delivered at a later date.

Thank you for your continued support with reading at our school,

Mrs Hartfield

International Food Afternoon

You may remember that last year we held a wonderful International Food Afternoon during the summer term. Parents prepared food from their own cultures or countries and many got together with friends to organise different tables to represent their country.   Because it was so successful, we hope to do another one this year on Friday 24th November.

If you feel you could prepare food for this event, or would like to get together with other parents  to set up a table from a particular country, please let Ms. Hunt know by Friday 10th November.

Again a very big thank you to the families who organised tables, provided amazing food and to those who came along and made this such a successful afternoon last year.

Wrap up London

For the fourth year running, we will be collecting coats for 'Wrap up London'. Coats you no longer need can make a real difference to the homeless and vulnerable during Winter time.

Coats are distributed via homeless shelters, refugee centres, organisations supporting the elderly, women’s refuges, children’s centres and other charities helping people in crisis.

So, if you are planning on having a  sort out over half-term, please hold on to any good quality winter coats (babies up to adults) and bring them into school on Wednesday 15th November This is the same day as the 'Bag to school' collection so please put coats in a separate bag.

Bag 2 School collection

The Bag 2 School collection will take place on Wednesday 15th November. Please drop bags off for 9 am.

School Dinners

Please remember to book school dinners on Scopay at least 1 day in advance or ring the school office before 9am if you have left it too late to book/cancel online for that day.

Allergies

If your child has an allergy please make sure the school office is informed. Please check the menu carefully before booking lunch for your child.

National Online Safety: Wake Up Wednesday Guides for Parents

We would like to make you aware of our ‘online safety’ advice, guidance and support page called ‘Wake Up Wednesday - what parents / carers need to know’.

Wake Up Wednesday, created by The National College, aims to inform parents and carers on topics such as social media platforms, gaming, and IPad security. They include top tips, important reminders and reality checks on a wide range of online safety topics. They are a great resource to keep up to date with the issues children may encounter.

Each week we will post relevant articles of interest to our newsletter that should help you and your child. Previous articles will be archived on a section of the 'computing' area of our website.

We thank you for your ongoing support in assuring the safety of our pupils online.

Please click  here for information on X.

Eco Committee

Eco News

It was great to welcome the new Eco Committee and Miss Bealin-Kelly at our first meeting this week. During our first meeting, we completed an environmental review and next week we will pick out three topics to work on over the coming year.

Eco Task - Whole School Help Needed

During November, everyone in the school will be planting a small tree on the school field. To help the tree grow it will have a bamboo support but we need to make these safe for us when we go outside and play. Therefore, we need your eco help!

Please could each child make a cane topper using recycled materials.

Old water bottles, yogurt pots, and broken tennis balls are ideal. The main thing is that it needs to be able to secure easily on the cane and not fall off. For more ideas and advice please go to - https://schoolgardening.rhs.org.uk/Resources/Activity/Fun-cane-toppers

Fun cane toppers / RHS Campaign for School Gardening

Create an imaginative and protective cap for the top of a cane or stick to prevent an injury, or to help support netting

schoolgardening.rhs.org.uk

Decorate it if you can, that way you will be able to know which tree you planted but no need if busy.

Please bring in one or two toppers for the canes on November the 17th.

Parent Tree Planting Volunteers

If you can come to lend a hand with our Tree planting on November the 17th can you email the school office so we can have an idea of numbers. It will help Surrey Council know how many adult volunteers they will send to us to help complete this task in the week after.

The time slots are 8.45 to 9.30am and 2.30 to 3.15pm. Please bring a spade as well!

Many thanks for your Eco Support!

Lost Property

Please collect lost items from the lost property box in the KS1 playground.  Please label everything clearly so it can be returned to the owner. Please note it can take some time for items to reach the lost property box depending on where they were lost.

Items not claimed from the lost property box will be disposed of periodically as it quickly builds up. Thank you.

Communicating with your child's teacher

Messages for teachers can be put in your child's reading/homework diary/bookbag, eg. pick up arrangements, homework issues, lost property, requesting a meeting with the teacher or anything else you would like the teacher to know.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Absences should still be communicated via the office. (see below)

Pick-up notes

Please note that if someone other than a parent/carer is picking your child up, you need to let the teacher or the office know. Please put pick-up notes in your child's reading/ homework diary or bookbag.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Children will not be released with someone else unless we have been notified of it.

If you do need to let the office know about a last minute pick-up change,  please do so before 2 pm if possible.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Y6 Independent Walkers

If your child is in Y6 and you would like to let us know they will be walking home from school independently, please email the office.

Y6 Mobile Phones

If Y6 children wish to bring their mobile phone to school, they just need to drop the phone at the school office before school and collect it after school.  Phones should be switched off please and not switched back on until children are off site.

No need to complete any form or email the office.

How to report your child being absent or sick

Please notify the school office every day your child is absent from school before 9 am so we can adjust dinner figures and complete the registers. Please either ring the school office on 01932 222536 and leave a voicemail or email absence@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk. If you email us about an absence, you will not receive an acknowledgement reply due to the large volume of emails we receive in relation to this daily.

If your child has a stomach bug, they should not return to school until 48 hours after the last episode of illness.

Absence Request

If you require a school absence for your child for some reason, please email the school office with the details.

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
